Barro Negro elephants from San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico

The origins of barro negro (black clay) hail back to the Monte Alban era in the southwestern state of Oaxaca, Mexico. However, in the 1950s artisan potter, Dona Rosa added a black sheen by polishing the pottery before firing. Today, these traditional folk art pieces are created by ~600 families of Zapotec and Mixteca artisans in and near San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca where it is the main source of income.

Alebrije elephants from San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca, Mexico

Originating in Mexico City, these fantastical creatures are the dreamt creation of cartenero Pedro Linares. They were brought to Oaxaca in the 1980s where artisans began carving the mythical figures from soft copal wood said to possess its own magical properties as the resin has ceremonial use and significance. Alebrije art is the main source of income for San Martin Tilcajete.
